The Nested Selves at the ICA (Portland, ME), 2009

The Nested Selves/Theater of Self, mixed media interactive installation, overall dimensions: 15’ x 15’ x 15’, 2009;
The Nested Selves is constructed with the idea that the Self is multiplied into a subset of personas. Each one possesses divergent drives, narratives, and perceptions to inform the self at every moment. By name they are: Efrosini (the elder); Magda (her daughter): Activista and Proper One (daughters of Magda); and Tarantella (hired director/manager). Visitors were invited to walk through this immersive installation; to sit and review all of the accumulated objects used to develop and embody each of the 5 personas that were displayed around the room. Three media pieces played continuously presented each of the personas in the context of various places, situations, and environments: The Bedroom Series is a media piece projected on the table top laptop; Commutes, depictions from places both in the US and abroad, projected on the central wall; and The Nested Selves projected on a canvas propped on the easel, comprised of multiple sequences that unfold the stories and characteristics of each persona, their lifestyles, some of their dynamics with one another, and with visitors during studio visits.
